Breast Reconstruction
Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in females in the UK. Treatment involves either partial removal of involved breast tissue is removed (lumpectomy) or the whole breast is removed (mastectomy). Modern techniques can involve preservation of nipple areolar complex where it is safe to do so. Other treatment modalities include chemotherapy and radiotherapy before and/or after surgery.
Most women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer are candidates for breast reconstruction using a variety of methods from breast implants to microsurgical reconstruction using own tissue from abdomen, back or thighs depending on the patient’s physique and preference and whether radiotherapy is needed.
The most common method of reconstruction involve utilising abdominal tissue to reconstruct the breast, however if you are not a candidate due to lack of abdominal tissue, scarring or previous surgery then there are several options available to you.
