The most common skin cancer treated in basal cell carcinoma which is a skin cancer that most often develops in sun exposed areas of face and body. People of all skin tones can develop this, but people with light skin that burn easily are at greater risk of this.

Moles and other skin lesions are removed if causing discomfort, changing /getting bigger, or for cosmetic reasons. Lesions that can be removed include moles, skin tags, cysts, lipomas and seborrheic keratosis. These lesions can be removed under local anaesthesia as day case.

Basal cell carcinoma is not life-threatening as it tends to grow slowly, and rarely spreads to another part of the body. However, early treatment is vital.  

Over time, basal cell carcinoma can become very large, invade deeply into skin, blood vessels and nerves. In advanced cases, these can invade muscle and bone. When the cancer grows deep, it can destroy normal anatomy and can be disfiguring. 

When found early, this skin cancer is highly treatable with less side effects and a higher chance of preserving anatomy. Treatment can be cryotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery depending on the cancer.

Surgery is performed usually as a day case under local anaesthesia. If the lesion is small, complete removal and direct closure can be at achieved. If the lesion is large, it may necessitate reconstruction using skin grafts or mobilisation of adjacent skin for coverage. 

Follow up & aftercare 

Dressings are applied and left on for 1 week. Sutures are normally removed in clinic after 1-2 weeks depending on area treated. 

Histology is normally available at 2 weeks and follow up is tailored to diagnosis. 

Minor bleeding after surgery can occur and normally only requires direct pressure. 

Infection can occur and is usually treated with a course of antibiotics. 

Wound healing problems in some areas where the blood supply is not optimal. This is normally treated with regular dressings util fully healed. 

Unpredictable scarring can occur depending on the area and size of lesion. We take all precautions to optimise healing for best outcome.
