Noticing a suspicious mole, lump, or mark on your skin can be concerning—but early diagnosis and expert care make a significant difference in both treatment outcomes and peace of mind. At Dr Hussain Plastic Surgery, our team of highly experienced consultants offers expert assessment and treatment of a wide range of skin lesions, from harmless cysts to more serious forms of skin cancer.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the types of skin conditions we treat, what to expect from surgery, and why prompt action is always the best course.

What You’ll Find in This Blog

What Are Skin Lesions?

Skin lesions refer to any abnormal growth or mark on the skin. These can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Common benign lesions include:

  • Moles
  • Skin tags
  • Cysts
  • Lipomas (fatty lumps under the skin)
  • Seborrhoeic keratosis (harmless, wart-like growths)

While many of these do not require medical treatment, they may be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they cause irritation.

At Dr Hussain Plastic Surgery, we offer day-case removal under local anaesthetic, ensuring minimal disruption to your daily routine and a smooth, comfortable experience.

When Skin Lesions May Be Cancerous

The most common types of skin cancer include:

1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

BCC is the most frequently diagnosed skin cancer. It typically appears on sun-exposed areas, such as the face, ears, and scalp. Although it tends to grow slowly and rarely spreads, it can cause significant local damage if left untreated.

Treatment usually involves surgical excision, but in some cases, cryotherapy or radiotherapy may be appropriate.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

SCC is less common but generally more aggressive. It has a higher risk of spreading (metastasising), particularly if left unchecked. Early removal is key to reducing long-term complications.

What Happens During Treatment?

If you notice a new or changing lesion, the first step is to book a consultation at our clinic. Our consultants will perform a thorough assessment, possibly including a biopsy if needed.

If removal is advised, the procedure is typically performed as a day-case surgery under local anaesthetic. Small lesions can usually be excised and stitched directly. For larger or more complex cases, our surgeons may use advanced reconstructive techniques, such as:

  • Skin grafts – transferring skin from another area of your body
  • Flap repair – using nearby skin and tissue to close the wound

This tailored approach ensures both effective cancer treatment and optimal aesthetic results.

The Recovery Process

Following surgery, a dressing will be applied to protect the site. Here’s what you can expect in the days and weeks following your procedure:

  • Dressing care: Most dressings remain in place for around one week.
  • Suture removal: Stitches are usually removed within 1–2 weeks, depending on the area and complexity.

Histology results: The excised tissue is sent to the laboratory, and results are typically available within two weeks. We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the outcome and any further treatment, if necessary.

Risks and Complications

All surgical procedures carry some risk, although complications are rare when performed by experienced hands. Possible issues include:

  • Minor bleeding or infection
  • Delayed healing, particularly in areas with reduced blood supply (e.g. lower legs)

Scarring – Our surgeons use meticulous techniques to keep scarring to a minimum, and we can advise on post-op scar care if required.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Early detection and treatment are crucial when it comes to skin cancer. A small basal cell carcinoma, for instance, is often simple to remove and requires minimal reconstruction. Left untreated, however, it can grow deeper into the skin and surrounding tissues, making treatment more complex.

Even benign lesions should be assessed if they change in appearance, become irritated, or start bleeding. What may seem harmless at first glance could turn out to be something more serious.
