A balance healthy diet is crucial when preparing for successful surgery. Not only does a healthy diet help reduce swelling and inflammation after surgery but also optimise healing of surgical scars and help patients achieve the best outcome possible.
We recommend that patients avoid processed foods and refined carbohydrates and reduce alcohol and caffeine intake at least four weeks prior to surgery. The ‘5 a day’ advice is a great way of ensuring plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet. Fresh foods such as fish, lean meat, eggs, nuts & seeds, to name a few, contain essential proteins that are essential for collagen production (a structural protein present in tissues) therefore optimise wound healing.
Free radicals are unstable atoms that cause damage to body cells and impair their healing function. Free radical levels will be elevated by stress on the body including surgery.
Certain vegetables and fruits that contain high levels of anti-oxidants, such berries, spinach and beans, are recommended to mop up free radicals and optimise cellular function. Major vitamins that facilitate the wound healing process include Vitamin A, C, E, selenium and magnesium. These not only reduce inflammation but are also vital in collagen production.
Staying well hydrated is recommended for clear skin and optimal body function.
